I HAVE recently read several items in the Bolton Evening News regarding "improvements" to the town centre.

A couple of these were about the railway station, and puzzled me somewhat.

As far as I can see, nothing is being done to improve the station at ground level. It will still be tiny, dark, and have no facilities. All the alterations appear to be on the platforms, where waiting rooms, a cafe, and toilets already exist.

Where is meant by "the footbridge" is another mystery, as the footbridge we knew was demolished years ago. No mention is made of the tunnel you now have to walk through to get out of the station. Nor is there any sign of that much needed item -- extra staff (to check that you have travelled with a ticket, as well as to help travellers to feel safer and to be able to buy their tickets before getting on the train).

The only alterations I can see at ground level appear to be to move the taxi rank into what is now a bus stop, and move the bus stop to the taxi rank!

This seems to be a strange move when only a few weeks previously we were told that the main bus station was going to be moved from Moor Lane to the bus/rail site. Has this stupid idea now been abandoned?
