LOOKING over a map of Derbyshire in April, 1967, were four Army cadets preparing for a tough Three Peaks walk the following month when they were to cover 30 miles in a fitness test.

The boys were all members of the 6th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Army Cadet Force. With their instructor Sgt Major George Rae they were taking extra lessons in compass and map reading.

The four cadets were: Sgt Richard Porter, aged 16, Lance Cpl James Mills, aged 14, Cadet Terence Birchall, aged 14, and Cadet Thomas Caton, aged 15.
