AN acclaimed one-woman play about a patient in a mental health ward will be staged at the Theatre Church, Astley Bridge, on Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3.

Alice Springs, by Robert King, is the story of Alice -- played by Christine Way -- the patient.

Although she has not spoken for 30 years, the audience is drawn into Alice's mental and emotional world as she battles to overcome her past.

Alice's dream is to go to Alice Springs "where the sun is always shining".

Hyde playwright Robert King is a mental health support worker in Oldham. He also teaches drama and creative writing to special needs groups.

Alice Springs challenges prejudice, fear and ignorance of mental health issues and also aims to promote people's right to respect, compassion and good quality services.

Written and developed in collaboration with the New Directions Theatre Company, the play was premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2000 and received a Four Star Critics Choice Review from the Scotsman newspaper.

This is the first time the play will have been performed in the North-west.

Tickets are £6, or £4 concessions, and are available from 01204 334400 and on the door on each evening from 7.30pm. The play starts at 8pm and there will be a discussion afterwards. The play is not suitable for under 14-year-olds.
