THE Countryside Lover is quite correct about reporting the dumping of fridges and freezers.

These are not the only potential pieces of hazardous waste that are dumped around our lanes and fields in Bolton.

One of the main problems is the fly tipping of asbestos, usually asbestos cement corrugated sheets that have come mainly from old garages/outhouses. Bolton Council go to a lot of trouble to ensure that any asbestos is safely removed from their properties, but, unfortunately, the privately-owned properties tend to ring any number advertising a man and a van.

These people may tell you that they are licensed, but how many people actually ask to see their carriers' licence? How many people request a copy of the consignment note that tells them where the waste has been taken to? This waste usually ends up dumped on the first convenient spot where the van can't be easily seen.

For the benefit of private house owners, if you are having this type of work carried out, ask for your copy of the Section 62 consignment note for the carriage and disposal of hazardous waste.

This note should contain your address, the carriers name, address and licence number, and the address of the waste disposal unit or landfill site. If this can't be provided, then the removal is contravening the Environment Agency regulations.
