UNBEATEN Northern Counties East League leaders Selby suffered an opening 20-minute onslaught at Victory Park.

Chorley, however, managed only one goal in this spell of supremacy and Selby equalised before missing two glorious chances to make life really difficult for the home side just before half-time.

Dean Cooper saw keeper Adam Mitchell parry a stinging early shot before Chorley took a seventh-minute lead.

A fine flowing move led to David Eatock sliding the ball across the face of goal for Lee Wilkinson to score easily at the far post.

The Magpies were well on top but Selby grabbed a shock equaliser in their first serious attack after 22 minutes - Joe Gaughan beating Paul Eatock with a flying header from Matt Wain's cross.

A goal four minutes after the break gave Chorley a timely boost, with Jamie Bates' floated centre from the left being squeezed home by Cooper at the back post.

But Selby continued to look lively going forward and Eatock pulled off a terrific acrobatic save from Russell Barley's 25-yard blockbuster.

Cooper's control then let him down as he raced clear again and Phil Baylis almost surprised Mitchell with a looping shot from distance, which the keeper was glad to flip over the top corner.

Chorley ought to have spared themselves a nerve-jangling finish following the dismissal of Selby's Wain for a second bookable offence on 74 minutes.

But though the Magpies created a host of clear-cut chances to settle the tie, they either were thwarted by the vigilance and bravery of Mitchell or, in the case of Bobby Jones and substitute Jamie Vermiglio, failed to find the clinical finish from point-blank range.
