From the Evening News, September 15, 1903: JOHN Duxbury and his wife live in Wigan-rd., Deane. One source of revenue adopted by the husband is breeding dogs. He held three licences, but when PC Bowling recently visited the house he found five canine species frolicking about the garden.

Mrs Duxbury produced three licences, and said she would have to look for the others. The officer called again later, and then she admitted that she had deceived him. They had only three licences and had intended disposing of two dogs. - A fine of 15s (75p) and costs, or 14 days with hard labour was imposed at the Borough Court today.

From the Evening News, September 15, 1953: A WEEK'S good weather will give Bolton farmers fine crops of barley, oats and wheat. Some farmers have already harvested these corn crops, particularly wheat, and they report heavy yields.

At a Horwich farm, which has 10 acres of corn under cultivation, some more fine weather is needed to gather the last of the corn.

Wet days have made a tangled mess of some of the corn, a frequent happening in this area, which is not the best for corn growing.

From the Evening News, September 14, 1978: THE Conservative leader Mrs Thatcher breezed into Bolton with a smile, a wave, and a promise to bring back grammar schools. Hundreds of shoppers, office workers and pensioners blocked the Town Hall square when she arrived for a 40-minute "meet the people" walk-about.

Mrs Thatcher got a warm welcome as she talked to housewives about shop prices and law and order, and she told everyone she wanted a General Election as soon as possible.

From the Evening News, September 15, 1993: TEACHERS could lose their jobs at a Bolton comprehensive school hit by a massive cash crisis.

Deane School is the first in Bolton to consider compulsory redundancies for teachers. The school has already "lost" 10 teaching posts - some through early retirement, and others who have got jobs elsewhere. But another two jobs are still under threat and must be axed by the New Year if the school is to balance the books.
