YOUNGSTERS climbing on to school roofs were warned by council chiefs today that they were risking serious injury and prosecution.

The warning comes after a 14-year-old boy escaped injury in a 10ft fall from the roof of St James' Church of England Primary School in Hillside Avenue, New Bury, on Wednesday evening.

Council chiefs say he fell on to a concrete courtyard after running along the roof with friends.

Paramedics contacted a key holder and rescued him unhurt.

The boy, who has not been named, did not require hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Bolton Council said: "We have fencing and other anti-crime measures in place at this and other schools as well as clear signs deterring trespassers.

"Despite this, some people are reckless enough to try and get into school grounds and the consequences can be serious.

"We have a programme to upgrade intruder alarm and CCTV systems and to install fencing and shutters in schools.

"Those who still persist in trespassing must be made aware that, as well as it being a very dangerous activity, they stand a good chance of being caught."
