FLAGS were lowered at Bolton fire stations yesterday, two years on from the Twin Towers terrorist attacks shocked the world.

Brigade flags were flown at half-mast from 8am to honour the memories of the 334 firefighters and 2,500 civilians killed.

Since the September 11 attacks, families of New York firefighters killed have sent Greater Manchester Fire Service more than 50 letters of thanks.

A fund set up in Manchester raised more than £270,000 from a series of charity events.

The money has been deposited in the New York Fire Department Fire Safety Education Fund and distributed to families. Letters sent back to Manchester were due to go on public display from today at Fire Service headquarters in Swinton.

County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said: "Many people gave a lot of time and effort to contribute to this fund and these letters show that their contributions are appreciated."

"Although the brigade is the point of contact for the families, the letters are intended for the public across Greater Manchester in general."
