PLANS to complete a town centre pedestrianisation zone in Leigh face a council vote on Thursday night.
Work to transform Bradshawgate will start later in the year if Wigan councillors approve the proposals.
They will consider views put forward during a two-month consultation period, which ended in May.
The plans to expand Leigh's pedestrian-only zone have been opposed by some traders who believe the scheme would damage their businesses.
They claim lost car parking spaces would mean customers would not shop there -- and they have submitted a petition to the council signed by 30 businesses.
But Leigh East Councillor Brian Jarvis said the scheme would create a safe area for shoppers.
Cllr Jarvis said: "The pedestrianisation of Bradshawgate has made shopping in the town centre a much safer and more pleasant experience for local people.
"We have taken on board the views expressed by local businesses but I believe the scheme should go ahead because it will benefit shoppers and businesses alike."
