THE name Woods and title wins are synonymous in the world of golf as Tiger continues to dominate the game.

Yet Sarah Woods, of Leigh, made a little bit of history of her own as she became the first girl ever to win the Bolton Junior Championship.

The 18-year-old Great Lever and Farnworth golfer shaved three shots off the ladies' course record at Turton on the way to landing the title, which she won by two shots from Joe Morrissey of Regent Park.

Her dad, Steve Woods, is a former captain at Great Lever and Farnworth and he has been amazed at her progress.

"She had never played before picking up a club in 1998 but since then she has never looked back.

"She now plays for Lancashire girls and the county ladies' team and of course when I play against her, she always wins."

Sarah, who is waiting for her A-level results from Winstanley College, Wigan, is hoping to study law at Sheffield University but that should not harm her development in golf.

"She usually only plays once a week now so she should be able to continue doing that while she's away," said her dad.

Sarah carded a 71 as she kept the field at bay on the Turton course. With her playing partner Andrew Gibbons from Deane, she finished ahead of the cream of the area's young golfers.

"I really didn't expect to win but I had a good round and probably played the 8th and 18th holes the best," she said.

"I haven't played much recently because of my exams so that was another reason why I didn't expect to do as well as I did."
