VOLUNTEERS across Bolton play a vital role in health and social care services, and their commitment is being recognised during National Volunteers' Week which runs from June 1-7.

A "Picnic in the Park" will take place on Saturday, to mark the contribution made by volunteers who work with people with learning difficulties.

It has been organised by the Joint Learning Disability Service, run by Bolton Primary Care Trust and Bolton Council's Social Services Department.

Jean Keohane, Volunteer Service Co-ordinator, said: "We have organised the day to celebrate National Volunteers' Week and to thank our own volunteers for their support.

She is hoping the event will also raise awareness about the benefits of volunteering.

Saturday's event takes place at Moses Gate Country Park, between 11am and 3pm, and includes a short walk before the picnic.

To find out more about the event and volunteering, contact Jean on 01204 360076.

Our volunteers support people with learning disabilities by involving them in healthy activities and events to promote healthier lifestyles, and at the same time volunteers have an opportunity to improve their own health."
