ASDA at Clayton Green will be giving customers plenty of food for thought on Sunday by holding a farmers' market selling produce grown within a few miles of the store.

The local suppliers will be setting up the stalls in the covered trolley parks and selling between 11am-5pm while the store is open.

The initiative is getting good support, with seven out of the 10 possible stalls already taken.

And if it proves a success the stallholders may be offered the chance to sell their goods in-store for a fixed period of time.

Asda's events co-ordinator, Morvem Guest, said: "This is a case of supporting local suppliers selling local produce because very little is available.

"Last year we supported a local supplier of yoghurts who sold in-store for a few months, but it's definitely something we need to be encouraging more of.

"If there's a good response we could allow them to sell in-store for a period of three to six months."

The Clayton Green store is hoping to follow other Asda stores that have tapped the local suppliers market and helped achieve sales of more than £80million a year from these goods for the company.

Ms Guest said: "The Kendal store currently has 80 local suppliers selling their goods at the store, which proves it can be a success."

Another farmers' market is planned at the Clayton Green store for Sunday, July 6.
