A VAN driver is still fighting for his life after a crash which killed a 20-year-old man from Bury.

The 38-year-old, who has not been named, suffered serious head injuries following a collision on Thursday between his vehicle and a Renault Clio V6 on Bradshaw Road, Bolton.

The car, which was being taken on a test run by a 22-year-old from Leigh, mounted the kerb and then crossed over to the other side of the road where it hit a Citroen van.

The van was catapulted off the road and landed 15 feet down an embankment.

The car passenger, a 20-year-old man from Affetside, Bury, was trapped for 30 minutes and had to be cut free by firefighters. He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital but died later.

The van driver who is from Haslingden was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital by the Greater Manchester Police helicopter. He underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.

The man is still under sedation in the intensive care unit and consultants will assess his other injuries later. His condition is currently described as "critical but stable".

The van driver is believed to have worked for EWS Commercial Architectural Aluminium Systems in Bolton.

The driver of the Renault, a 22-year-old man from Leigh, suffered minor head injuries and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Traffic Police are appealing for anyone who saw the accident or the Renault before the accident to come forward. Sgt Barry Fairclough from Bolton Police said "

"I would appeal for anyone who saw the car and how it was being driven before the accident to come forward."
