A FRAIL pensioner has died in hospital three days after being attacked in her home by a burglar -- who stole just £30.

Phyllis Mayoh, aged 88, was thrown to the floor when confronted by the thief.

He then dragged her into the lounge and threw her on to a bed as he demanded cash. Her hip was broken.

And today her nephew Mr John Hartshorne said: "I hope they bring the evil monster who did this to justice. If he can do this to a frail elderly lady, who knows what he would do to someone else."

Mrs Mayoh -- who was left traumatised by the attack -- lost her fight for life in the Royal Bolton Hospital last night after undergoing an operation to repair her hip.

She never recovered from the surgery and died with her family and the pastor from her local church at her bedside.

Mr Hartshorne said: "Thank God we were able to be with her at the end. I want to say thank you to the staff at the hospital for getting us all there.

"Her son Roy came from Chester. We also have family in Australia whom I have contacted."

He said his aunt was well known in the area where she lived and was a religious woman who worshipped at the Church of the Nazarene.

Today Bolton South East MP Brian Iddon urged the man responsible to give himself up.

Mr Iddon, a close friend of Mrs Mayoh, condemned the attack on her as a cowardly Crime.

Police are treating the investigation as a manslaughter inquiry. A post mortem examination was due to be carried out today.

Mrs Mayoh, who had a heart condition, was attacked on Sunday when the thief sneaked into her home in Rosamond Street, Daubhill, through the front door, which had been left ajar.

Mrs Mayoh told police after the attack she did not hear anything but suddenly spotted a "dirty" pair of trainers in front of her.

Mrs Mayoh, who used a wheelchair to get about and a stick at home because she was crippled with arthritis, managed to pull a Care Line alarm to raise the alarm.

She then told the thief that the police were on the way.

Her attacker grabbed the pensioner's purse and fled.

Today MP Mr Iddon said that as a close friend of her nephew Mr Hartshorne he had known Mrs Mayoh for many years.

He said he was deeply shocked: "This tragic death must be on the conscience of the young man who threw her to the ground, breaking her hip in the process and leading to her death after an operation.

"I would urge the man responsible for the cowardly attack to come forward and admit the crime and face the justice which awaits him."

The attacker is described as white, aged about 17, 6ft tall with mousey short hair, He was wearing dirty white trainers and denim jeans.
