A COUPLE say it is only matter of time before someone is killed by drivers speeding past their home.

Arthur and Brenda Ashton, who moved to Grimeford Lane, Anderton, six months ago from Wigan, want county council bosses to lower the limit on the narrow, windy road to 30mph.

Mr Ashton said there had been too many near-misses to count and only last week there was a crash outside his house.

Their home is a few metres from busy Bolton Road which has a limit of 40mph and Mr Ashton said he cannot understand why cars are allowed to speed down their residential street.

He said: " It's an accident waiting to happen. It's only a matter of time before someone gets killed here.

"This street is full of young children and elderly people and it's impossible for them to cross the road safely."

Mr Ashton has contacted county council, borough council and parish council chiefs.

Anderton ward borough councillor Cath Hoyle said: "A road like this should not have such a high speed limit and something needs to be done about this as soon as possible."

And Chorley MP Linsday Hoyle has pledged to write to the county council and borough counci in an effort to get the speed limit lowered.

He said: "It's an anomaly that the main road's limit is 40mph while Grimeford Lane is 60mph.

"Some of the road is actually in Greater Manchester, but we are trying to get a speed limit of 40mph on the part that is in Chorley"

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "Grimeford Lane is a 'D' restricted road with a speed limit of 60mph.

"The Government has recently recognised that there are some issues with roads like this and is currently producing new guidelines.

"When we receive this report we will be bearing the views of the people in Grimeford Lane in mind."
