I WRITE to thank you for the effort put in by the Bolton Evening News in helping me to get a reasonable response from Bolton Council when I had been unfairly charged for parking in a motorcycle zone. You did an excellent job.

It is only organisations with your influence who stands any chance of putting wrongs right. It is a very good example of the Press acting in the interest of the public.

I was never more relieved than when the reporter rang me on April 4 to say the charge was being dropped.

I feel the people of Bolton will have an ongoing problem while the council insist on promoting this regressive system of charging on our car parks. Only when it changes to a system of pay-on-exit, as applies on such private car parks as Debenhams, will the motorists of Bolton feel they can park in our town without the fear of a hefty fine hanging over them. When that change occurs, there would be no need for these wardens on our streets.

I feel that we, the ordinary motorists, have to keep fighting this regime until the council relents. Our only other weapon if the council does not make the change is through the ballot box.

You would think that the Labour members of the council would have sensed that danger. I have certainly made Bob Howarth aware of my opinion in the two letters I have written to him since my parking problems.
