THE Poytress Cup Final, the last final of Bury Table Tennis League the season, was between Division Three's Unsworth CC, who had already won League Cup, and Maccabi E from Division Five.

Unsworth are a strong Division Three team and although they had to give away an eight point handicap in each game they emerged comfortable winners after only seven of the nine sets had been completed.

Chris Sutcliffe led the way with his customary three wins to which Steve Morris added two and Dave Jackson one to give a final victory to Unsworth by 6-3. Marc Sheldon and Peter Canter were the players from Maccabi to get on the scoresheet.

The two teams at the bottom of Division One who were the teams promoted at the end of last season have two more matches to play and need good wins from both of them to survive their first season at the top level.

St Philips A came up against Champions Ramsbottom A and went down by the maximum score. Little Lever confirmed their runners up spot by beating Ramsbottom C 9-1.

Jim Chadwick and Mick Dore both scored three wins as Cricketers beat Carlton Club A by 0-1 and Simon Charnley also scored three for Mosses A as they got the better of Prestwich A by 6-4.

Graham Jeffries scored three for Location against YMCA A but those three wins only ensured a draw and YMCA seem to have acquired enough points now to survive their first season in the Bury League.

Michael Moir of Champions Ramsbottom A has won the individual Top Ten Medal.

The championship of Division Two was decided when the top two teams met and the match ended in a 6-4 victory to Mosses B who will now be the champions with Seedfield A as runners up.

One set of note worth mentioning in this match was the one between Vinny Croft and David Poytress which David won 25-23; 32--30!

The two teams at the bottom, Prestwich D and Carlton Club C met this week and drew the match 5-5 that really helped neither team and both will be relegated to Division Three at the end of the season.

The battle for the Top Ten medal will run until the last match of the season with Derek Buckley of Ramsbottom on 48 just one point ahead of Jeff Ingber of Maccabi with Vinny Croft of Mosses on 45.

Unsworth moved into second place just two points behind leaders Claybank after their 9-1 victory over Maccabi B and Unsworth still look favourites to take the championship as they still have one match to play and Claybank completed their season by drawing 5-5 with third placed ELPM A, who could still take the runners up spot if they can get five points from their last match.

Elton Vale A completed their season with a 9-1 victory over Carlton Club D. The position at the bottom of the table will not become clear until the final round of league matches are played next week.

At the bottom of Division Four, Holmar B have finished their season and are definitely relegated and it looks like they will be joined by their A team unless they can win their final match 10-0 and hope BGSOB C don't score a point.

Thanks to Matthew Gaunt's treble, BGSOB C gained five valuable points this week as did their B team, who were playing ELPM B, and Peter Gregory was the player in this match to remain undefeated.

Only the runners-up spot is up for grabs at the top of the table. Maccabi C in second place have completed their league programme and are currently five points ahead of Elton Vale B who have one game left to play.

Top of the table met bottom of the table in Division Five and the result was an only to be expected maximum victory for Prestwich F over Seedfield F. The two ELPM teams had mixed fortunes.

The D team went down 8-2 to BGSOB D while the C team had a fine victory over fourth placed Maccabi E. Holmar C entertained Elton Vale C and although Alan Fletcher scored three wins for Elton Vale, Holmar won their fifth match of the season 7-3.

Finals Night with presentation of all league and cup trophies will be held on Monday, April 14 at ELPM Social Club commencing at 7.30pm.

All players and friends are invited to attend this end of season occasion.
