DOES anyone know anything about the obelisk on the side of Winter Hill?, writes Mr F. Woodward, of Sheep Cote Green Farm, Smithills.
"I've been in touch with the Halliwell Local History Society, but they can't throw any light on it."
Well, Mr Woodward, if such an august society does not know, and a local farmer does not know, what chance to I have? So I throw the question open to readers of this column. And to identify the location of the obelisk, I print this sketch map, provided by Mr Woodward.
If you are into map reading, Mr Woodward tells me that "it is just below the south-east corner of the reservoir at about grid reference 679133 on Ordnance Survey Sheet 109."
So if you know the answer, please tell me so that I can solve Mr Woodward's mystery.
