From the Evening News, March 21, 1903: SIR,- Will you kindly allow me a short space in your valuable medium to ventilate a judicious warning to cyclists traversing Deane-rd?

It perhaps has occurred to some, but not all wheelers, that on the length of the tram track is deposited a messy fatty black substance, which is, I believe, discharged from the axle-boxes of the cars; and against the effects of this lubricant I would entreat cyclists to jealously guard their tyres.

Not only is the composition destructive to rubber, but it will eat off the enamel from the framework, as if burned. To cycle on any other part of the road other than the tram track is enough to dislodge the interior organisms of one's anatomy, as from Unity Chapel to Deane Brow the road on each side of the tramway is a disgrace to the Borough.

Fellow cyclists, beware of this grease. Yours, etc., Cyclist

WARRINGTON went back to work today as its shell-shocked people sent a signal of defiance to IRA bombers who brought them a weekend of blood and mayhem. The scene of Saturday's blasts which felled more than 50 lunchtime shoppers and killed three-year-old Jonathan Ball, was bedecked with messages, floral tributes and cuddly toys. This afternoon 16 victims are still in hospital, two of them in a critical condition. A surgeon said that most of 12-year-old Tim Parry's face was blown away and his skull fractured in the blast. His father Colin condemned the "inhuman, callous killers", and added: "I have got a son who is not going to live, a good looking boy pulled apart - and for what?"

SHERRY, a 10-years-old black alsation, is a superdog - and that is official. She has just won the national "Pet of the Year" title. The judges picked Sherry from more than 300 pets after hearing how she rescued her owner's young daughter from drowning in a lake at Southport. Sherry's family, the Wildings, of Morris Green Lane, Bolton, told of how after 14-years-old Gina got into difficulties trying to swim across the lake, Sherry plunged into the water, Gina grabbed hold of her tail, and was pulled back to the bank.

FOOTBALL clubs have set their faces against the televising of League matches, even though the Cup Final is to be screened. They are generally satisfied with the present "secret" arrangement for the sound broadcast of League matches.

Floodlit football is another controversial subject, but a proposal is likely soon seeking permission for a number of games to be played at night to ease fixture congestion. There is also the problem of taxation, and the question of passing the burden on to the public. The minimum admission fee to league football is now 1s 9d (8p).
