A WINDOW dresser from Turton who had everything to live for and no apparent problems hanged himself from the stairs at his home, an inquest was told.

Matthew Donald Jolley had enjoyed a day out with his partner, Julian Begg, and Mr Begg's sister, Jacqueline Begg, before going out for a meal hours before he was found dead.

Both told the Blackburn inquest that Matthew's only problem had been with a shop that would only give him a credit note for a pair of shoes given as a Christmas present that he had returned.

Miss Begg said: "I remember him giggling about his shoes, he was really happy."

Mr Jolley, aged 30, of Wellington Road, Turton, had lived with Mr Begg, his partner since 1995. On the Saturday after Christmas, they and Miss Begg went shopping first in Bolton and then went to Manchester where they had a meal.

There had been some "words" because Mr Jolley was returning his Christmas present because he didn't like it, but they had an "enjoyable" day shopping.

Mr Begg said they had got in at around midnight and Mr Jolley had apologised before they went upstairs. The next day he discovered Mr Jolley hanging from the stairs by a piece of cord.

He told the inquest he could think of no reason why his partner would take his own life.

Recording a verdict that Mr Jolley killed himself, coroner Michael Singleton said it would never be known why he had done it.

"It seems to me that Matthew Jolley had everything to live for," said Mr Singleton. "He was in a sound relationship, good work and had no obvious concerns."

, and why he did this will remain one of life's mysteries."
