From the Evening News, March 13, 1903: A LARGE audience, included in which were a number of local clergymen and ministers, assembled last night in the lower schoolroom at the Victoria Hall to listen to the denunciation of what was described as the "crowning wrong of the animal world" - vivisection.

Mr J.P. Thomasson presided, and remarked that it was quite likely that in the past vivisection might have given important information, but, after 1900 years of Christianity in a Christian nation, it ought to be thought disgraceful even to gain valuable information by torturing animals.

The lecturer, Mr R. Somerville Wood, appealed for support to a Bill which had been introduced in the House of Commons, pointing out that the Bill would not only put a stop to some of the cruelties now practised on animals, but to all cruelty. An animal would have to be dead before an operation could be performed.

ONE of Bolton's staunchest "true Blues" has sensationally quit the Tory Party - because he claims John Major's government is deserting its principles and mis-managing many crucial issues to Britain.

Bradshaw man Brian Tetlow, who has been a passionate driving force in the party for more than 40 years, says that if he is accused of deserting a sinking ship, it is "because the ship has been holed by the crew". But he stressed: "There is no other party for me. I just hope the party returns to its ideals so that I can rejoin."
