CHORLEY Lynx enhanced their prospects of reaching the knockout stages of the Arriva Trains Cup with a 22-16 win over Workington Town at Victory Park.

Workington struck first in the eighth minute with a try from Brett Smith and he added the extras.

It took Lynx three minutes to get on level terms with a Dave Ingram try after Tim Street had managed to unload the ball in the tackle, John Braddish adding the conversion.

Lynx fell behind again in the 22nd minute with a try from Dave Pettit which stemmed from a needless penalty.

Chorley finally they put together their best move of the half in the 29th minute which ended with Dave Whittle diving over and John Braddish adding the conversion.

Just when it seemed that Lynx were beginning to take control an intended long pass was intercepted by Kevin Hetherington and he went almost the full length of the field to edge the visitors ahead again.

Lynx started the second half much better and were in front again in the 48th minute with a try from Mike Briggs after a break by Mark McCully, Braddish again slotting over the conversion.

Workington had the chance to reduce the arrears in the 51st minute, but Jonathan Heaney pulled his penalty effort wide.

Lynx were then reduced to 12 men when Dave Whittle was sin-binned but despite being under constant pressure the only reward for Workington was a Hetherington penalty in the 61st minute as Lynx's defence stood from under the onslaught.

Lynx sealed the game with minutes from time with a debut try. Liam Bretherton, who skipped through a gap in the Workington defence to touch down. Despite coming under more pressure Lynx held on quite comfortably for a hard-earned victory.
