THE Bolton Hospice Lottery is celebrating a successful first six months -- having given away more than £18,000.

More than 3,000 people are currently taking part each week in the local lottery since it began last October. And, as lottery manager Louise Ashworth explains, there have been plenty of winners -- including the hospice itself.

"I always try contacting the £1,000 winners every Friday morning," she said.

"Understandably, a lot of people playing have some connection with the hospice through family and friends having been cared for by us.

"But there are also many who have no previous connection at all."

Winners of the top weekly prize included a Halliwell couple who were able to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a holiday thanks to their win.

And Toppholme Court in Farnworth has proved the luckiest lottery venue in the borough so far. One resident won the £1,000 prize in January, and three others have all won £10.

Added Louise:"We are absolutely delighted with the lottery's success over the last six months. The people of Bolton have been so enthusiastic and supportive."

They have also ensured a vital regular cash boost for the hospice off Chorley New Road, which costs £1.3 million a year to run.
