YOUNG birdwatchers in Bolton are making sure their feathered friends get off to a flying start this year by helping to create the ideal habitat for them.
Bolton Wildlife Explorers Young Ornithology Club has received a grant for £2,000 from a community action fund towards developing their adopted woodland area in United Utilities' Jumbles Country Park.
Countryside ranger Glynn Haworth, who has been working with the youngsters aged eight to 16, said they had been working hard making bird tables, nest boxes and feeders. They had also been learning traditional skills such as hedge-laying and coppicing.
"The grant means they can start work on their next project, creating a circular trail within the woodland and making tree identity boards. The boards will help visitors learn more about trees, and there will site map to guide them around the area," said Glynn.
The group is looking for help from anyone who would like to join in. Helpers are advised to wear old clothes and boots, and to bring a wheelbarrow and spade if they have them. Call Glynn on 853360 for more details.
