A FATHER of two is still seriously ill in hospital, with his family at his bedside, after being involved in an accident with a car five days ago.
Henry Stevens, aged 58, of Hillside Avenue, Blackrod, was crossing the A6 Manchester Road at the junction with Station Road when he was struck by a Volkswagen Golf.
Mr Stevens, a lorry driver, was walking home from his job at Greens of Blackrod when the accident happened.
On Sunday, he underwent surgery at Hope Hospital on his right leg and has had a cage fitted around it to keep the bones straight with metal pins.
Mr Steven's son, Matthew, aged 23, who lives in Runcorn, has been with his mother Norma, aged 56, and older brother Mark, aged 27, since the accident happened.
He said: "It's a waiting game really. It was a shock for us all. My mum is still very shook up, but we've had such a lot of support from friends and family, and people living nearby.
"My dad's a really caring person -- he gets on with everyone round here."
Police are still appealing for witnesses to the collision at 6.30pm last Friday. Anyone with information is asked to call 0161 856 5972.
