THE finishing touches are being put in place on a distinctive landmark taking shape in Bolton town centre.

Shoppers and town centre workers have been watching with interest as scaffolders constructed a 30ft high mediaeval style archway across Churchgate.

Workers from E R Campbell Scaffolders and Walsh's Joinery have been building the archway near to the Market Cross as a focal point for a series of celebrations to mark the 750th anniversary of Bolton's Charter.

Russ Campbell, manager of E R Campbell said: "We have had quite a few shoppers coming up the lads asking them what they are doing."

The archway, made primarily out of scaffolding and plywood cladding, should be ready in time for the actual anniversary of the signing of William de Ferrers 1253 charter to the town on Tuesday.

The charter is generally accepted as the official creation point in history of the Borough of Bolton.

Designed by architect Mark Head of Bradshaw Gass and Hope, the archway is intended to be in keeping with the time the Charter was written, and it includes arrow slits, battlements and a portcullis.

It will provide a gateway into Churchgate until January 25.

During final construction work tomorrow, Churchgate will be closed to traffic from 7am until 1pm.

The construction team has faced a tough challenge building the arch in just five days.

E R Campbell Scaffolders normally work as contract scaffolders, although they have had some unusual requests in the past.

They were once asked to construct a large climbing frame at Tatton Park.

Mr Campbell said: "We are very pleased to have been asked to be part of the project."

John Jewitt, landlord of the Man and Scythe had the idea of building the archway.

As part of the charter celebrations on Tuesday there will be a historical re-enactment of the signing of the original charter in Churchgate at 10 am. On January 17 the Mayor's Charity Ball will be held at the Reebok Stadium and over January 18 and 19 there will be a mediaeval market in Churchgate.
