THE BBC Philharmonic Orchestra stages a series of three Prokofiev anniversary concerts in Manchester to mark the 50th anniversary of the celebrated composer's death.

The first in the series takes place on January 31 at The Bridgewater Hall, 7.30pm. This concert opens with a rare performance of the Suite from Prokofiev's last full-length ballet, and his first violin concerto. It ends with the composer's fifth symphony. Gianandrea Noseda will be conducting, and James Ehnes will feature on violin.

Sir Edward Downes, the foremost conductor of Prokofiev's music of his generation, takes to the podium in the second of the series, at 7.30pm, in The Bridgewater Hall. The concert opens with the jaunty Suite from Prokofiev's first successful opera, The Love for Three Oranges. The conductor's first cello concerto will then follow, performed by Steven Isserlis. The concert ends with the cantata Alexander Nevsky.

The Royal Northern College of Music hosts the final concert of the series on Monday, February 10, 1.30pm. Sir Edward Downes will conduct the Suite, Egyptian Nights, and Prokofiev's ebullient Fourth Symphony. Tickets and further details from 0161 907 5555.
