PLANS to transform waste ground in Westhoughton into a residential area have been given a cautious welcome.

Neighbours are pleased that the site in Howarth Street has been designated for housing, but have reservations about the plans to build six semi-detached houses, eight apartments and 22 car parking spaces.

Residents fear the current plans are too close to their own homes, need additional drainage and create too much traffic. They say bungalows would be more appropriate for the area.

Westhoughton Town Council has objected to the plans with councillors fearing the residential area would have a detrimental affect on people living in nearby Mill Street.

Cllr David Wilkinson has called for improvements to both the surface and footpath of Howarth Street.

The plans, which have been submitted by the Caxton Webb company, will be discussed at Thursday's planning meeting.
