FOUR penalty saves from highly rated keeper James Hasledine sealed Atherton Town a place in the semi finals of the Lancashire FA Amateur Challenge Shield.
The young custodian was the hero for Town in a sudden death spot kick shoot-out for an away triumph at Storeys of Lancaster. Trailing to a goal for Storeys just after the half time interval Town levelled when Clinton McLoughlin scored and shortly after was tripped for Steve Dixon to put Atherton 2-1 up from the penalty spot. Elton Vale crashed out at the quarter final stage beaten 4-1 on penalties at home by Downhall Green United. The scores had finished 2-2 after 90 minutes, Derek Watson and John Armstrong scoring for the home side. The Manchester League outfit then appeared to have clinched it when Watson made it 3-2 in extra time only for Downhall to hit back.
Vale managed Guy Mallinson enthused, "It was disappointing to lose but it really was a wonderful cup tie, full of good football."
