FORMER West Ham assistant manager Frank Lampard believes the signing of Lee Bowyer will help the club avoid relegation.

The Premiership's bottom club yesterday opened talks with Bowyer after agreeing a fee with Leeds for the England midfielder.

Hammers boss Glenn Roeder is desperate to add to his squad during the transfer window and Bowyer, who is out of contract at Elland Road at the end of season, is available in a cut-price deal.

Bowyer's off-the-field problems have been well documented but Lampard, who left his role as assistant to former Hammers manager Harry Redknapp two years ago, believes the move is a good one.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "They definitely need something at the club.

"Lee Bowyer has had his problems but the club need to do their best to make sure they are not relegated.

"This move is so important. If Lee comes here and does the business I'm sure fans will pat Glenn Roeder on the back."
