TV STAR Vernon Kay has confirmed that he and girlfriend Tess Daly got engaged on Christmas Day.

Romantic Vernon, aged 28, got down on one knee to propose to Tess at her parents' home in Stockport.

Vernon, who comes from Lostock, said: "We haven't set a date for the wedding yet. There are no plans -- we are just really, really happy being engaged and carrying on as we were."

Tess, aged 31,a presenter with SMTV Live, said: "I was so shocked and surprised, but I am truly over the moon.

"It's the best Christmas present I've ever had."

The newly-engaged couple were spotted on Boxing Day at the Reebok Stadium+ watching Bolton Wanderers' 4-3 victory over Newcastle.

Vernon, who presents the Sunday morning programme T4 on Channel 4, said they did not know where they would be getting married.

The former Horwich St Joseph's High School pupil has been dating Tess for the past three years. They met at a BBC Christmas Party.

He first revealed his relationship with Tess in October, 2001, when he told the Bolton Evening News they were an "item". She was working in Los Angeles at the time and he spoke of missing her.

Vernon first appeared on television when he featured in the ITV fly-on-the-wall documentary Babewatch in 1998. He had been spotted by a top modelling agency at the BBC Clothes Show and the cameras followed him and other hopefuls as they began their careers on the catwalk.

At the time, he was described as the "Liam Gallagher of the modelling world".

Vernon soon began a career in television and, as well as presenting programmes on UK Play, he was signed by the BBC to co-present the Saturday morning children's programme FBi.
