BRITAIN'S tallest sculpture is set to go up in Manchester. A 184ft floodlit work of art has been designed for a site next to the City of Manchester Stadium, which was built to stage the Commonwealth Games last year.
The steel sculpture will feature 200 tapered columns shooting from its centre and is being compared to a fireworks explosion.
The plan has been put forward by London based designer Tom Heatherwick, a former Manchester Polytechnic student, to celebrate the successful Games.
Aimed at capturing the power of the athletes and the crack of a starting pistol, it is titled 'B of the Bang'.
The sculpture was chosen by a team of judges which included local residents.
Planning consent is likely to be granted later this month and the sculpture is due to be completed in July.
It is hoped the sculpture will become as famous a landmark as the 65ft Angel of the North at Gateshead.
