HISTORIC documents charting some of the milestones in Bolton's history will go on show at a special exhibition to mark the 750th anniversary of the granting of the town's Charter this month.

Staff from the Archives and Local Studies Unit at Bolton Central Library have arranged an open day on Monday, January 20, when people will be able to see the documents and other articles linked with Bolton's history. It will complement a range of special events to celebrate the anniversary of the granting of a Charter to Bolton by William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, making the town a free borough.

These include a special Celebration of Bolton Charter Ball at the Reebok on January 17 and a two-day medieval fair in Churchgate over the weekend of January 18 and 19 .

The exhibition of the historic documents will be staged in the archive search room at the Central Library in Le Mans Crescent, from 10am-4pm.

Items that will be in the display include reproductions of the Charter, reports of archeological digs carried out around Bolton and its districts, a reproduction of a 1520 map of the Smithills Estate and microfilms of old newspapers. There will even be illustrations on display of the execution of Lord Derby in Churchgate after the English Civil War.

It is also hoped to have the Bridgeman Register on display, which is a register of title deeds to properties and lands covering 1200-1662.

In the afternoon, a series of historical talks will take place in the Lecture Theatre in the basement of the Central Library.

Admission to the exhibition and talks is free.
