Wanderers produced their best form of the season so far in beating Sunderland 2-0 at Roker Park.

Their attack was inspired by Garry Jones and Neil Whatmore, and the latter shot them into a 15th minute lead with his fourth goal in six games of the campaign.

The Wanderers went further ahead in the 66th minute when Peter Reid was on target after Whatmore and former Bolton goalkeeper Barry Siddall had contested a Willie Morgan cross.

Jones caused all kinds of problems from the off, and in a remarkable dribble took the ball past three defenders to the left of goal.

He spotted Morgan in space and delivered a great cross but the winger fired over.

But Bolton went ahead thanks to Morgan, who cut in from the left and fired at Siddall, the ball went loose and Whatmore tapped in.

The second was no less than Bolton deserved, with Jones outstanding.

But again Morgan was involved, with a cross onto Greaves' head.

Reid was in the right place at the right time and knocked home to the empty net.

CENTRE-BACKS Mark Seagraves and Mark Winstanley bore the brunt of the damage as the Millmoor Jinx struck again.

Wanderers were beaten 2-1 at Rotherham thanks to a brace from Bermuda-born Shaun Goater.

Bolton missed plenty of chances, although this was their least impressive display of the season thus far. But nothing should be taken away from Rotherham, who battled hard and effectively for their win.

On 33 minutes the home side went ahead, after ex-Bolton ace Tony Cunningham layed the ball off for Goater who knocked in at the far post.

The second on 69 minutes was a disaster for Winstanley, who was wrestled off the ball by Goater who scored. Phil Brown grabbed a consolation goal.

with 11 minutes left, but Wanderers could not show the same battle, they have showed in other games this season, to equalise.

ARSENAL thumped Wanderers 4-1 at Highbury, in a game that showed the gulf in class between top and bottom of the Premiership.

Incredibly Wanderers went ahead with an early Alan Thompson goal after 13 minutes. It was a fantastic diving header from a Nathan Blake cross which was fumbled into goal by David Seaman.

Thompson didn't even realise he had scored, but after that it was one-way traffic, as boss Colin Todd said: "I am disappointed at the manner in which we lost the game.

"We just did not show the public how well we can play. The reputation of the Arsenal players got to us. We showed a bit of character in the second half, but this defeat shows us that there's still a long way to go."

Eight minutes after Thompson's opener, Ian Wright scored an equaliser after being put through by the elegant Dennis Bergkamp. When Wright scored his second on 25 minutes, the England striker broke Cliff Bastin's Arsenal scoring record, with his 179th goal for the club.

Wright later completed his hat-trick while Ray Parlour, who was excellent in midfield alongside Vieira, Petit and Overmars, made it four.
