AN operation to combat street crime in Bolton in the run-up to Christmas has been hailed a success.

Police joined forces with Bolton Town Centre Company, Bolton Victim Support and Witness Service for Operation Canary.

The initiative involved a mobile police station based at Moor Lane bus station from the start of December.

Officers distributed crime prevention leaflets and offered personal safety advice to shoppers and travellers.

In addition, 800 personal attack alarms and several hundred ultra-violet security marking pens were issued to people in a bid to help protect them and their property.

As a result of the operation, police say no street crime offences have been reported to have taken place in that area.

The clampdown was part of Greater Manchester Police's Operation Hawk, which is aimed at combating street crime across the force's area.

Inspector Karan Lee, from Bolton's Operational Policing Unit, said: "We are extremely pleased with the results of this operation. However, we would like to send out a clear message to criminals that this is just the beginning.

"To keep street crime at bay, we will continue to have a high-profile police presence and run similar campaigns in the town centre, particularly in busy areas such as the bus station."

Kath Bradley, district manager for Victim Support and Witness Service, said: "We were pleased to be involved in this initiative and enjoyed helping the Bolton community to protect themselves against crime."
