THE Christmas and New Year festivities have prompted Transco, the gas pipeline operator, to issue safety advice to businesses and homeowners.

Transco operates the 24-hour gas emergency service and is asking homeowners and businesses to be aware of gas safety when returning to homes, offices and factories which have been left unoccupied.

A Transco spokesman said: "With many premises likely to be empty over the festive period, we are advising everyone to be particularly wary when they return to their homes or open up business premises.

"If people think they can smell gas inside or in the road outside their buildings or homes, they should call the Transco national freephone gas emergency number 0800 111 999 immediately. The emergency call centres are open 24 hours a day.

"Remember to stay safe and follow these simple gas safety procedures if you suspect a leak inside a building.

Put out cigarettes. Do not use naked flames.

Don't turn on electric switches on or off.

Turn off the gas at the meter

Open doors and windows to get rid of the gas.

Ring the Gas Emergency Service 0800 111 999

The Transco spokesman added: "It will be business as usual for us over Christmas and the New Year and it's essential that if anyone smells gas they should contact Transco immediately."
