PUPILS at a Bolton school now have their own version of the Booker Prize to vote for.

Smithills School is one of a number of schools taking part in the Askews Torchlight Children's Book Award.

Over the next few months, pupils will read the books shortlisted for the prize, argue about their favourites and then vote for their choice by April 4 next year.

Askews, who provide library services to schools and public libraries around the world, launched the award to highlight books children love to read -- rather than those chosen for them by adults.

"Everyone is looking for the successor to J K Rowling, Harry Potter's author, and this gives the children themselves a chance to join the hunt," says Askews spokesman Rob Sanderson.

The award excludes writers who have already won a major prize and is aimed at children in the nine to age group. Launched last year, it proved an instant success with schools and many set up special reading groups as a result.
