NATIONAL Service deprived 'Slim', as he was and still is referred to by his teammates, a place in the 1953 FA Cup Final and a Wanderers' appearance record.
Signed as an amateur, he turned pro in 1947 and hit the first team three years later. He was a regular at wing half in the 51-52 season but was 'called up' and made only 16 appearances over the next two years. He went straight back into the first team on his return and missed only six Division One games in the next five seasons. He made up for his 1953 disappointment when he won a winners' medal in the 1958 triumph. In his later years at the club he switched to centre half, helping Graham Stanley and Warwick Rimmer to develop as wing-halves.
Appearances: 518. Goals: 9.
