BORN in Farnworth, Greaves was automatic choice of every manager he played under from establishing himself in the 1967 to the day he quit in 1980 when he joined Seattle in the NASL.
He made his debut as a centre-forward, top scored playing at inside forward then developed into a midfield player of great repute. Arsenal and Liverpool were interested but he stayed at Burnden where, having tasted relegation to the old Third Division, he was a central figure in two title wins that saw Wanderers storm back to the top flight. He captained the side in the First Division before making his final appearance in March 1980 - just short of Eddie Hopkinson's appearance record.
Appearances: 575. Goals: 85.
