MANCHESTER -- still basking in the success of the Commonwealth Games -- has begun work on furthering its appeal as a vibrant visitor destination.

The first consultation meeting has been held to develop a new five-year tourism strategy for Greater Manchester.

When it is finalised by April next year it will seek to make the city region -- including Bolton -- a world-class centre for urban tourism.

The strategy is being led by the Marketing Manchester organisation.

Organisers believe that the success of the Commonwealth Games established a new, improved reputation for Manchester.

New attractions such as Urbis, the Imperial War Museum and the revamped Manchester Art Gallery have also enhanced the city's appeal and there has been large-scale development in hotel and conference facilities. It is thought the city is well positioned to develop its tourism potential and also act as a gateway to the glorious countryside and attractions of the north of England.
