ROADWORKS on the M62 have been lifted over Christmas -- in an attempt to help seasonal journeys for as many as 130,000 motorists every day.

The Highways Agency have removed lane and speed restrictions on the M62 between Junction 18 and Junction 20 until Monday, January 6.

The £10 million scheme is improving the road surface, lighting columns, safety fences and drainage, as well as strengthening five bridges. A section of the M66 is also being resurfaced.

Highways Agency Project Manager, Graeme Freeman, said: "This is our Christmas present to motorists.

"We know that, at this time of year, people make a lot more journeys, driving to friends or families for Christmas lunch or dropping presents off, and we want to play our part in making it a stress-free experience."

In the New Year, there will be a new arrangement of narrow lanes and contraflows. A 50mph speed limit will be in operation. The work is due to be completed in the spring.
