SPORTS people in Bolton are celebrating the news that the town will host the Greater Manchester Youth Games in 2003.

And the borough is also commited to hosting them for the following two years.

It is great news for Bolton and for the other nine remaining boroughs which make up Greater Manchester.

The Games have a well deserved reputation for highlighting success in young people's sports careers and many go on to take part in national and international events.

The event is over two days, June 14 and 15, and will use three great venues, the Bolton Arena, Horwich Leisure Centre and St Joseph's Sports College. The Games will be fully inclusive with 17 competitions for disabled young people.

There are 10 main sports which will feature including swimming, rugby league, rugby union, tennis, athletics, basketball, girls football, cricket, hockey and netball.

This tournament is not just about excellence, it is about taking part and having fun. There are rewards for everyone, no matter what level of game they play.

The Games have a huge impact on individuals, organisations and communities, with more than 3,000 young people from 10 boroughs set to take part.

An additional 500 officials will be required to support them.

The event is also a platform for arts, dance and cultural activities and it is expected that a great many artists and performers will increase the number of people who will be involved.
