AN extensive consultation about the improvement and modernisation of older people's services in Bury is underway.

Between now and the end of February, everyone in the borough will have an opportunity to be part of the process. Residents of two elderly people's homes which are recommended for closure, Warthfield in Bury, and Radcliffe's Whittaker House, will be involved in the discussions.

Bury Council is looking at ways to help more older people to be able to live in their own homes for as long as possible.

Government inspections have been critical of Bury's policy of placing too many older people in residential care and not offering a range of alternative care packages that allows them to live in their own homes for longer.

These inspections also say that the range of support services needs to be further developed.

Age Concern will be acting as the independent body in the process.
