THE story could not have been scripted any better for pupils who have celebrated the opening of a new library at Clevelands School primary school, Heaton.

With a huge collection to choose from in the new building, the budding bookworms will be able to dive into a mountain of literature.

Headteacher Glynis Mitchell said: "The children are loving it and it is certainly not suffering from underuse. It is beneficial for teaching and benefiting the pupils.

"Special thanks should be given to the parent teachers association, who raised the £3,000 needed for the work with a variety of fundraising events including summer fairs and dances."

The school has pooled together the previous class libraries and bought in the latest texts. There are also cushions and colourful carpets for the children to sit on.

A team of parents and children has catalogued them all and the collection will be monitored by three young librarians -- pupils at the school. Charlie Bowling, aged eight, pictured, said: "I think it's brilliant. I like all the books and the cushions and it is really bright and colourful. I really like it when the teacher reads to us in here."
