WITH reference to Peter Johnston's written put-down of the woman correspondent who was unhappy with local rail services, I seem to recall he may still work for the GMPTE.

His excuses for train operator First NW illustrates what I have long thought was a cosy relationship between the PTE and First, which is not in the public interest.

What are our Labour councillors on the PTE/PTA doing about insisting on value for money in exchange for the £80m or so public subsidy to First?

I have contacted the PTE in the past over First's service failures, and the PTE was quite useless.

First does not answer complaints properly, if at all, contrary to the national rail standards charter.

I would recommend that unresolved complaints about rail travel be sent to the Secretary, Rail Passengers Committee, Store Street, Manchester. Forget the PTE, which is only really interested in its "pet hobby" Metrolink.

Fortunately, its exorbitant prices are not inflicted on the public in Bolton. Blue Bus and First Manchester bus fares are more than enough to put up with.
