SAM Allardyce made four changes - two enforced, two by choice - to the side beaten 4-1 at Fulham as Wanderers opened their Reebok account against Charlton.

Jay Jay Okocha and Gudni Bergsson were ruled out with knee ligament injuries and youngsters Kevin Nolan and Bernard Mendy, who scored for France U21s

against Iceland in midweek, were left out as the manager rang the changes.

Allardyce opted for experience, drafting in Anthony Barness at right-back and Mike Whitlow in the centre of defence while Paul Warhurst and Henrik Pedersen

took over from Nolan and Okocha respectively.

For Pedersen it was his first Premiership start since January - a reward for his performance as second half substitute at Fulham which was one of the few plus

points to come out of the game.

Nolan and Mendy were joined on the bench by 19-year-old Jonathan Walters, the livewire striker who has impressed since joining Wanderers from Blackburn at

the end of last season and was on target in the pre-season victory over Verona.

Charlton, who sold midfielder Mark Kinsella to Aston Villa for £750,000 during the week, were unchanged following their 3-2 opening day defeat at home to

Chelsea, when they let slip a two-goal lead.

Half-time

YOURI Djorkaeff put Wanderers a goal up inside 80 seconds but Sam Allardyce's men were left counting the cost of missed chances as Charlton got the benefit

of a debatable penalty verdict to go in level at half-time.

Djorkaeff showed great anticipation and opportunism to race in and help the ball over the line after Addicks' keeper Dean Kiely saved but failed to hold a

thundering Paul Warhurst drive.

Wanderers could easily have stretched their lead too if Henrik Pedersen and Ricardo Gardner had not been wayward with their finishing after good build-ups.

The let-offs gave Charlton the encouragement to press forward and they created problems for the Bolton back four before getting the benefit of a contentious

penalty decision by York referee Matt Messias in the 26th minute.

Richard Rufus challenged Pedersen and Bruno N'Gotty for a Claus Jensen corner and when the Charlton man went down the referee pointed to the spot. Chris

Bart-Williams converted the penalty and, for the second successive Saturday, Wanderers had wasted an early advantage.

They were close to restoring their lead six minutes later when Pedersen was brought down by Rufus in the box and, while Mr Messias was waving away penalty

appeals, Djorkaeff played on - only to have his shot towards an unguarded goal blocked by Luke Young.

16:59: WANDERERS 1, CHARLTON 2

SAM Allardyce saw his unhappy Wanderers beaten for the second time in successive games after scoring the first goal.

At Fulham it took four minutes, this time it came even quicker with Youri Djorkaeff pouncing inside 80 seconds.

A debatable 26th minute penalty, converted by Chris Bart-Williams, left them counting the cost of earlier missed chances but the real damage was done on 71

minutes when a Charlton counter-attack ended with Graham Stuart storming into the box to set up Jason Euell for the matchwinner.

Djorkaeff and Henrik Pedersen worked hard as Wanderers tried to make the most of their territorial advantage in the second half but it just didn't happen in

front of goal where Michael Ricketts was off-target, Per Frandsen and Djorkaeff had shots blocked and substitutes Kevin Nolan and Dean Holdsworth were denied

by excellent Dean Kiely saves.
