EVENING NEWS, Monday, June 8, 1970: The last time England played Brazil in the World Cup

ENGLAND were down but not dispondent after their scorching showdown with Brazil 32 years ago, dubbed the 'match of the century' in the Bolton Evening News of Monday, June 8, 1970.

Reporter Alan Hubbard believed that "England only had themselves to blame" for their set-back in Mexico, as they missed many chances.

The South Americans won the game with a solitary strike from Jairzinho just before the hour mark. A goal still celebrated today as one of the World Cup's best.

Forward Tostao found Pele in the area with a looping pass.

The Brazilian maestro was immediately pressured by Alan Mullery and Terry Cooper but this left the right wing free for Jairzinho to steal in untracked.

Pele lazily laid the ball off and the winger sped in before thundering a powerful shot over the helpless Gordon Banks.

Hubbard also noted how Banks had earlier pulled off a "magnificent save" from a Pele header, he would not have been aware that over a quarter of a century later people still regard this as the greatest save ever.

He made no mention of the almighty tussle between Pele and England captain Bobby Moore, or the infamous swapping of shirts between the two on the full-time whistle.

After the game centre half Brian Labone reflected: "Brazil concentrated on defence, but we'll qualify and beat them in the final." Unfortunately this was not the case as England were beaten 3-2 by West Germany in the Quarter Finals.

Brazil went on to win the competition in fine style against Italy 4-1.

The England players were almost certainly slimmer as they lost on average 10lbs each at the Jalisco Stadium, where the temperature soared to 98 degrees.

The Evening News also reported that England were set to quit their base at the Hilton Hotel in Guadalajara, as they were being driven crazy by the noise from fans.

Some players could not sleep the night before the game, and Bobby Charlton was awake until 4am.
