AN innovative scheme designed to get deaf children in Bolton more involved in football has won a Government sports award.

"Hear the Cheer" has won the Sportsmatch Special Award 2002 in recognition for outstanding good practice in the disabled category.

Thomason Memorial School has benefited from the scheme, which is devised by Phonak UK, and run by David Campbell Celebrity Soccer Schools. Budding Beckhams were taught soccer skills in a special course which included dribbling, passing and shooting.

Sports Minister Richard Caborn MP said: "Sometimes young people need a little extra encouragement to get involved in some kind of sport. 'Hear the Cheer' is providing just that."
