CAROL Walsh has travelled thousands of miles back to Bolton this week to fulfil a pact she made with office colleagues ten years ago. When she was 17, Carol, who lived in Harwood, worked at the National Health Prescription Pricing Bureau in Manchester. A couple of years later when she and a colleague were thinking of leaving the office, about 16 of the girls swapped addresses and made a pact to meet again at 7pm on the seventh day of the seventh month in 1977 on the seventh step of Bolton Town Hall. Carol has now made her first return trip from her home in Ontario, Canada, with husband and three children, primarily to fulfil the promise.

HOPE was abandoned early today for five men missing after an explosion late last night in a new shaft at the 100-years-old Point of Air Colliery at the mouth of the River Dee. This brings the death roll to six.

SIR, - Is nothing to be done about the thick black smoke issuing from Wellington Yard chimney almost every day? The stench is unbearable and definitely unhygienic. Are we to wait for an epidemic amongst our children before this abomination is removed - along with the flies - to a non-residential district? Yours, Nora Clare (Mrs), 7 Milton-st., Bolton.
