The armchair supporters, frustrated at the lack of live action on the public channels, are forking out for satellite or paying a visit to pubs showing the weekday matches. The systems cost £260.

BRITAIN'S teenage girls have become the new generation of "big spenders" with well over £1,000 million in ready cash between them, says a market survey. Top of their shopping list comes cosmetics, clothing, cigarettes and chocolate.

A MILLION bus passengers in Greater Manchester face fare rises of 10p in the pound in the next few weeks, instead of the proposed rises of between 14 and 20 per cent. They have been cut back because of "misleading publicity".

TWO ways in which people can help themselves to better health are instanced by Dr Alexander Hutchinson, Medical Officer of Health for Bolton, in his annual report for last year. One is to avoid the "definite menace to good health", a craze for slimming, and the other is to have a good, comfortable bed.

If only we could all remember, he says:

Eat all good Nature doth bestow,

It will amalgamate below,

If your mind says it shall be so,

But if you once begin to doubt,

Your gastric juice will find you out.

AS suburban Bolton is interested in the laying of Manchester's extra service pipes for conveying water from Thirlmere, it will be of interest to state that, at the Manchester Waterworks Committee meeting yesterday, "satisfactory progress" was reported as being made with the great work. The city now has, in all its reserves, 77 days' supply, against 48 a year ago. Pipes for Thirlmere water can be seen at various parts of the road between Bolton and Chorley.

AT 3.30 this afternoon, Joseph Vose (48), of 85, Chorley-st., was knocked down by a tramcar proceeding along Victoria-square, but, fortunately, not run over. He was removed to the Infirmary in the Fire Station Ambulance with his face very much crushed.
